A construction apprentice is an entry level position with training, both in the classroom and on construction sites. With this training and the work experience gained during the apprenticeship, the employee will have the opportunity to become a full-time journey worker. The apprentice will perform tasks involving physical labor at highway and heavy construction projects.

Classroom training is provided in Frankfort, NY and the apprentice must be able to travel to this training facility. Construction sites are throughout upstate NY, so travel to the sites is required. Staying out of town may be required during the construction season.

May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, pumps, compressors, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. Specific tasks may include the set up and tear down of work zones in traffic, the installation of culverts and utilities, bridge construction, grading, paving and erosion control. Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, or rakes. Position, join, align, or seal structural components, such as concrete wall sections or pipes. Load, unload, or identify construction materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications. Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed. Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones.

All individuals applying for the positions of foreman, laborer, operator, mechanic, carpenter, welder, or truck driver must have a valid CDL B with air brakes and tanker endorsements in order to be eligible for employment with Lancaster Development.
